Overview
Anno wrote his depression into mecha deconstruction: teenagers pilot against Angels while the show dissects their minds. Twenty six episodes plus the 1997 End of Evangelion film: the final episodes, made on a collapsing budget, became avant garde legend. Rei, Asuka, and Shinji entered the archetype lexicon. It rebuilt anime economics and fan culture worldwide. The most argued ending in the medium.
