Astro Boy
1963-1966 | Animation | Japan | Created by Osamu Tezuka
Overview
The first popular anime series, adapted by Tezuka from his own manga about a robot boy with a 100,000 horsepower heart. Set the visual grammar of Japanese animation: big eyes, limited frame counts, and moral seriousness under the cuteness. Tezuka animated it while still drawing manga, sleeping in the studio. Every anime since descends from this template.
